Cycling Ratings?

Question: What are the various ratings related to road cycling - CAT 1, 2; Masters, etc. Is there a web site or unifying body that governs this stuff? Thanks

Answer: There are 2 overlapping systems - age and skill. Any given race could be a combo of one or several. For example, you could see a race for 35+ age, all skills, or you could see a race for 35-39 Cats 1-4 only. It's the organizer's choice, typically based on how big a field is available. "Racing Age" is based on your age at the end of the calendar year. So I'm 40 now, but my birthday is in July, so my racing age is 41. Category is based on skill, typically you upgrade by having results - but there's also some discretion by the state/regional officials. In the US, it's governed by USA Cycling. Here's a linky to their rulebook which explains all.
