Question: 1) A ball is thrown upward from the top of a 25.8-m-tall building. The ball's initial speed is 12 m/s. At the same instant, a person is running on the ground at a distance of 32.4 m from the building. What must be the average speed of the person if he is to catch the ball at the bottom of the building? 2) A woman on a bridge 59.0 m high sees a raft floating at a constant speed on the river below. She drops a stone from rest in an attempt to hit the raft. The stone is released when the raft has 6.70 m more to travel before passing under the bridge. The stone hits the water 5.00 m in front of the raft. Find the speed of the raft.

Answer: geeze this one is long. anyway. 1) y=y0+v(vert initial)t-1/2gt^2 -25.8=(12m/s)t-1/2(9.8)t^2 t=3.83s v=d/t v=32.4/3.83 v=8.46 m/s 2)y=y0+v(vert initial)t-1/2gt^2 -59m=-1/2(9.8m/s/s)t^2 t=3.47s v(raft)=1.7m/3.27s=.519m/s
